The Got Soul Choir was founded by Maryam Ghaffari in Edinburgh in 2012 out of a sheer love of soul music, a passion to serve her community and to make a difference. Got Soul is passionate about serving the community and making a difference. It is committed to bringing people together out of isolation and loneliness through the arts, music and singing. It provides the opportunity for those over the age of 16 regardless of experience to become involved in a choir that aims to be a support system through the commitment to the group, getting people out of the house and into the group every week.
In 2015 Maryam approached ACK to support her to expand Got Soul to Glasgow. Maryam felt that Glasgow was a city most in need and many were affected by isolation and loneliness e.g. those affected by life cycle transition i.e. divorce or their children leaving home, carers, those whose family members have health issues, mental health issues, drug and alcohol issues etc.
ACK secured an Awards for All grant application for Got Soul to do just that – expand to Glasgow. With just under £10,000 Got Soul were able to run workshops for 38 weeks of a year, pay for venue and equipment; enable Got Soul to market and publicise their workshops to encourage participation; finance a music director, accompanist and to provide the opportunity to share their opportunity with a larger audience through two community events.
The benefits for those who attended were to:
- Have the opportunity to alleviate loneliness and social isolation
- An experience that will increase their self-esteem leading to higher levels of confidence
- An experience to become more self-aware
- An opportunity to meet others whilst engaged in a fun group activity
