The TCCL Lodge is a non profit organisation who had the vision to provide a holiday house where children with cancer and their families can spend quality time together in a special place. The lodge was set up in St Andrews and has welcomed many families through the doors, offering them beautiful accommodation to relax, not too far from Ninewells hospital and in a small town with lots of visitor attractions and things to do.
We were approached by TCCL Lodge in 2015 to run a fundraising campaign in schools to help raise the money needed to buy and renovate the lodge. We quickly decided on a (TCCL) monster theme and the Monster March was born!
What on earth is a Monster March?!
We invited schools, nurseries and youth groups to register to take part in this event which would take place during a specified month and involved the children creating monster masks to wear during a march or procession around the school. All children paid a £1 to take part. Many schools, Brownies and Rainbows groups, Cubs and Beavers and nurseries took part across Dundee, Perthshire and Fife. We went out to visit everyone taking part to thank them and take photos and invited the local press to many of the events. This helped to raise the profile of the lodge.
The event was a success and so we did it all again in 2016!! It was up to the individual schools to design their own event but we did send out craft ideas, letters for parents and certificates to everyone taking part to help them. One school even planned a day around their Monster March with storytellers, competitions and prize giving ceremony!
We then went on to hold a Family Fun Day at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Dundee, supported them with a Cupcakes and Canape evening, provided them with a slot at a Dragon’s Den type event we were hosting and ran an online auction – in total raising almost £8,000 and a lot of press attention! We also supported them with their summer ball in 2015 which raised £17,000.
